How to Make BBQ Chicken on the Stove

Here is a brief overview of how to BBQ Chicken on the stove in a skillet. The full recipe including ingredient amounts can be found in the printable recipe card below.

  1. Prepare the chicken: to ensure even cooking, pound the chicken to ½ inch thickness. More details on how to do this below.
  2. Season the chicken: season both sides of the chicken with your favorite poultry dry rub, my homemade dry rub, or simply season liberally with salt and black pepper to keep things simple.
  3. Heat a skillet: heat olive oil and butter in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Cook the chicken: add the chicken to the skillet. Cook for 5-7 minutes, then flip and cook an additional 5-7 minutes longer until the chicken is cooked through and the internal temp using a meat thermometer is 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove from pan.
  5. Make the BBQ Pan sauce: to the same pan over medium-high heat, add bbq sauce, chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, and brown sugar. Whisk to combine, making sure to scrape up any bits left behind on the bottom of the pan. Allow the BBQ pan sauce to simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  6. Return the chicken to the pan: add the chicken back to the pan and use a spoon to coat the chicken with sauce. Simmer for a few minutes longer then serve.

BBQ Sauce

Using a delicious BBQ sauce is important!

My recipe for homemade BBQ Sauce is delicious, but even I don’t always feel like making BBQ sauce from scratch. Especially on a busy weeknight. Feel free to use your favorite store bought BBQ sauce which really comes down to personal preference. Do you like sweet? Tangy? Smoky? Sweet?

I tend to gravitate towards Sweet Baby Ray’s or Stubbs but there are so many delicious options available.

Pounding Chicken

Pounding chicken to an even thickness helps ensure that it cooks evenly. For this recipe I recommend pounding chicken to about ½ inch thickness.

  1. Cover the chicken with plastic wrap or place it in a zip-lock bag.
  2. Use a meat mallet, a heavy skillet, or even a rolling pin to gently pound the chicken.
  3. Start from the center and work your way out.
  4. Pound until chicken is ½ inch thick.

BBQ Pan Sauce

BBQ Pan sauce for chicken adds so much flavor to both skillet-cooked chicken and grilled chicken. You only need a few ingredients to make BBQ Pan Sauce. Full instructions are below on how to make it:

  • BBQ sauce
  • chicken broth
  • apple cider vinegar
  • brown sugar

You’ll combine all of the pan sauce ingredients in a skillet, bring it to a simmer, and allow it to simmer for 5-10 minutes. This sauce will coat the chicken and adds so much delicious flavor to chicken.

Chicken Temp

Chicken should be cooked to 165 degrees Fahrenheit. I highly recommend using an instant read thermometer to check the temperature of your meat as it cooks.
